Why you need a social media strategy

A social media marketing strategy is the foundation that helps you build your presence online. Today, being on social media is not just about posting pictures and videos, but strategically planning and posting content to achieve an objective or goal. You don't want to waste your time on social media posting content that won't give you any results. That's why you need a social media strategy to drive results from posting on social media and fulfilling a purpose or a goal. The purpose or goal can be driving traffic, increasing sales, building brand awareness, etc.

First, let's understand social media strategy.

What is a social media strategy?

A social media strategy is a blueprint of your activities on social media. It is your answer to the what, who, where, and how of being on social media. You can even create a different strategy for different social media platforms. Eg.- Instagram Marketing Strategy, Facebook Marketing Strategy, LinkedIn Marketing Strategy, and so on.

Reasons why you should have a social media marketing strategy

  1. Define your purpose to be on social media When you're posting on social media, you are investing your time and resources in creating, posting, and managing your social media account. You don't want to waste your time and resources on building something that isn't helping you grow. A social media marketing strategy helps you in answering the why. That is your purpose or goal to be on social media. It will always remind you of your goal whenever you're off the track.

  2. Define your brand's personality Sometimes, how you just recognize a brand by just seeing an image, text, or video. This is a brand's personality, its unique identity. It is defined by the colors, words you choose, your tone, etc. Your brand personality defines how you want to be perceived by people. A strategy helps you document this and flow across the organization and maintain it.

  3. Stay organized and consistent As a brand owner, you know what is your brand's vision, personality, voice, etc. If you're working with someone, there may be a possibility that they may sometimes deviate from it. To maintain consistency, it is important to have a social media marketing strategy in place so that everyone is on the same page. Having a social media strategy in place also helps in staying organized, so that you don't lose on time, customers or resources. It can be planning content, scheduling your content, listing down tasks to be done, etc. Check out our list of social media content scheduling and publishing tools.

  4. Measure your performance A social media strategy will give you a benchmark against which you can measure the performance of your social media efforts. You can gain insights and try to improve based on those insights. Download our social media strategy deck template and create social media strategy for your brand.

If you don't understand your goals, target audience, and brand voice, you may lose track in the long run. Social media strategy is an important stepping stone that'll help you be focused and shape your social media journey.
